2007-2008:
MACALESTER COLLEGE FUND RAISING YEAR IN REVIEW

June 1, 2007-May 31, 2008

A record 11,851 donors made a gift to the College in fiscal year 2008, and together they set a new record in philanthropic support for Macalester—the third consecutive year of unprecedented giving.

During the fiscal year that ended May 31, 2008, the College received 15 percent more in gifts than during the previous year. The total received, excluding bequests, was $18.6 million which is $2.4 million more than the fiscal year 2007 record of $16.2 million.

The participation rate from Alumni donors making gifts for any purpose held steady at 41%.  This stopped the college’s decline of the past two years and bucked the national trend of decreasing participation rates at higher education institutions.

With several building projects underway or in planning stages, more than half of these funds were directed to the Institute for Global Citizenship, the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, and the Macalester Athletic and Recreation Center, which will be renamed the Leonard Center. In all, $9,257,081 was received for these capital projects.

Through the hard work of Annual Fund volunteers and staff, the Annual Fund set a new record with gifts totaling $3,288,858 from all sources. This represents an increase of $195,788 from the 2007 record of $3,093,070.  Alumni contributions to the Annual Fund increased $227,701.

Over 1,800 alumni who had not contributed in the previous year participated in the Annual Fund’s fiscal 2008 “Be A Number” participation challenge, and their gifts earned $89,908 in additional match money.

Several Reunion classes set records with their gift campaigns this year. The Class of 2003 with the leadership of Susan Anderson, Adrienne Dorn, Wyn Douglas and James Hamilton reached 55 percent participation, which was 18 percent higher than in 2007. Not to be outdone, the Class of 1958 under the leadership of Nancy Slaughter, Dale Turnham and Bruce Hedblom reached a new record for 50th Reunion participation with 66 percent of the class contributing.

The Class of 2008 set a Macalester participation record for its Senior Class Gift with 50 percent participation.

As construction for the Leonard Center nears completion, fundraising for it is also drawing to a close. Gifts and pledges total $24.1 million for the athletic and recreation facility, toward a goal of $26 million by October.
