Speaker Bio

Dr. Hanan Ashrawi
Challenges to Peace in the Middle East
A Mideast Peace Summit (2007)

From 1991-93 Dr. Ashrawi was the Official Spokesperson for the Palestinian Authority delegation for the U.S.-Israel-Palestinian Peace Talks, and a member of the leadership team, which resulted ultimately in the Oslo Accords.

Dr. Ashrawi is credited with being one of the main architects of the 1991 Madrid Peace Talks so-called two-stage framework. The Madrid framework served as the point of departure for the Oslo Accords.

She has served the Palestinian Authority in numerous leadership roles. From 1996-98 Ashrawi served as the Minister of Higher Education for the PA. In 1998 she resigned from the PA in protest over corruption. She is currently an elected member of the Palestinian Legislative Council for Jerusalem.

She has chaired the Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizen's Rights. She has been awarded the Jane Adams International Woman's Leadership Award, The Defender of Democracy Award, The Mahatma Ghandi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation, and The Sydney Peace Prize.

Ashrawi is currently General Secretary of Miftah - The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, which she founded. The goal of Miftah is to "foster the principles of democracy and effective dialogue based on free and candid exchange of information and ideas."

She has been described as "a tireless and courageous campaigner for human rights," a "powerful woman in a world of big boys and their guns," and by the late Edward Said as a "creator and speaker of the new language of the Palestinians."

She is the author of many books and articles including Contemporary Palestinian Poetry and Fiction, Literary Translation: Theory and Practice, From Intifada to Independence and her autobiography This Side of Peace: A Personal Account.
