Green Building Resources Landscaping Turf lawn is not native to Minnesota and requires more water, fertilizer, and maintenance than using native plants. Xeriscaping is a landscaping method that uses native plants therefore decreasing the amount of irrigation needed. Using compost and mulch in the soil can also reduce evaporation loss. Decreasing the amount of impervious surfaces such as driveways and patios helps with storm water quantity and quality. Pervious pavers allow rain water to flow down and slowly be absorbed by the ground instead of flowing directly to the storm sewer.
