Professor Raymond
Robertson presented a paper at the National Bureau
of Economic Research (NBER) Summer Institute Workshop in August.
The paper is titled "Did NAFTA Increase Wage Convergence
Between U.S. and Mexico?"
Professor Karl
Egge prepared and presented a paper on international entrepreneurship
for the Hawaii International Conference on Business in Honolulu.
The paper, based on research in Malaysia, was written with two
co-authors, one from Singapore and one from Malaysia, and was
titled "Boosting Technopreneurship Through Business Plan
Competitions." Click

Professor Sarah
West continued her research on market-based incentives
for the control of vehicle pollution. In particular, she presented
new work on how gas taxes can be set to both reduce pollution
and minimize the burden placed on poor households. West, along
with coauthor Rob Williams, presented "An Econometrically
Based Assessment of the Optimal Second-Best Gasoline Tax in a
Setting with Heterogeneous Consumers," at the American Economics
Association Meetings in Washington D.C.
Professor West continues to work with Macalester graduate,
Soren Anderson ('01) on research on the effect of open space on
property values. This research will help policymakers to balance
urban development with greenway and park preservation. Professor
West presented this work at the University of Minnesota's Environmental

2002 -
Professors Karl
Egge and Jeff Evans participated in an international faculty
development seminar in Malaysia. Past faculty participants have
traveled to South Africa (Prof. Sukhatme, 2000), Brazil (Prof.
Ferderer, 1997) and Hungary (Prof. Krueger, 1995).
Professor Sarah
West presented the paper "Empirical Estimates of
a Consumer Demand System: Implications for the Incidence of Environmental
Taxes" at the National Bureau of Economic Research Conference
on Environmental Economics in Newport, Rhode Island.
Professor Karl
Egge presented a paper, "The View From There and
Their: Insights on International Entrepreneurship in Singapore
and Malaysia," for the Babson College - Kauffman Foundation
Entrepreneurship Research Conference, at the University of Colorado.
Professor Karine
Moe presented a paper entitled "Redefining Work for
Mexican Girls" at the "Society for the Advancement of
Socio-Economics" conference at the Humphrey Institute of
Public Affairs, University of Minnesota.
Professor Raymond
Robertson was promoted to the rank of Associated
Professor with tenure.
Professor Raymond
Robertson went to Brazil to collect household survey data
as part of his NSF grant. The grant funded him and two students,
Jason Heil ('03) and Vini Pabon ('03), to work on a research project
on the effect of globalization on trade and wage inequality.
Professor Gary Krueger was in the Ukraine with a group
of other distinguished economists. They participated in a program
created by EERC
( the Economics Education and Research Consortium), revising and
supervising research proposals from young Russian and Ukrainian
economists.
2001 -
The department welcomed the editorial staff of the
Journal of Economic Perspectives to Macalester. The Journal
of Economic Perspectives (JEP) is one of the flagship journals
of the American Economic Association. The JEP attempts to fill
a gap between the general interest press and most other academic
economics journals. The journal offers readers an accessible source
for state-of-the-art economic thinking. Tim Taylor, editor
of the JEP, moved his office to Macalester from the University
of Minnesota. We are very excited to welcome Tim and his assistantCarmen
Largaespada!
Professor Karine
Moe was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with
tenure.
Professor Moe attended a conference in Norway where she
presented her paper entitled "Marking Time: Gendered Definitions
of Work and Implications for Schooling of Mexican Youth".
Professor Sarah
West presented three papers at three conferences. She
presented "Distributional Effects of Alternative Vehicle
Pollution Control Policies," at the Heartland Environmental
and Resource Economics Workshop in Ames, Iowa; "Empirical
Estimates of a Consumer Demand System: Implications for the Incidence
of Environmental Taxes," at the National Bureau of Economic
Research Pre-Conference on Environmental Economics, in Boston;
and "Empirical Estimates for Environmental Policy Making
in a Second Best Setting," at the annual meetings of the
American Economics Association in Atlanta.
Professor Raymond
Robertson visited Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Mexico.
He presented a paper at the Latin American and Caribbean Economics
Association in Montevideo, Uruguay and was invited to evaluate
study abroad programs in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Santiago,
Chile. He also worked as a consultant to the Inter-American Development
Bank.
Professor Pete
Ferderer presented a paper titled, "Liquidity Provision
by Market Makers and Financial Crises: The Case of the Great Depression,"
(co-authored with Kyle Richey '00) at the 61st Annual Meeting
of the Economic History Association in Philadelphia. He also traveled
to Atlanta to attend the American Economic Association Meetings
and presented a paper titled, "Institutional Innovation and
the Creation of Liquid Financial Markets: The Case of Bankers'
Acceptances, 1914-1934."
James Sallee and Ghaith Hiary worked with Professors
Moe and West to compile a database that will be used
to enrich class assignments and to aid student research. Their
project was funded by Keck and Mellon grants. Go to Web
