Student Activities
Students in the Department of Economics are active within the department,
on campus, and in the community. The following pages provide information
about student accomplishments and organizations within the department.
Senior Honors Projects
The honors program aims to enhance the academic
experiences of three different (not necessarily mutually exclusive)
groups of students. First, the program allows top students to "push
the envelope" and move beyond the limits of depth and breadth they
encounter in their courses. Second, students considering academic or
research careers will have an opportunity to experience what such careers
entail. Finally, late-bloomers and those who excel in less traditional
learning environments can use the program to achieve academic fulfillment
and success. To learn more about the program contact Prof. Raymond Robertson
(robertson@macalester.edu).

Senior Department and College Awards
Each year the department honors its top students. The department awards
night is an important annual tradition made special by Prof. Egge's
memorable "Where Are They Now?" presentation. To see who was
honored this year click here.
Study Abroad
In keeping with the college tradition of internationalism, every
year economics majors go abroad. Their experiences greatly enhance
their Macalester experience and the department works with each
student individually to tailor their program to best complement
their study of economics. Click
here to read more about what students pursued last year.
Student Organizations
The department sponsors two student organizations. Omicron
Delta Epsilon (ODE)is the national economics honors society.
The Macalester chapter of ODE is Alpha, denoting that it is one
of the oldest chapters in the state of Minnesota. Students are
invited to join in their junior or senior years based on grade
point average, commitment to the discipline and professor recommendation.
Women in Economics (WIE), is open to all students and its
members work to support women within the department and encourage
women to pursue careers in economics. WIE was founded in 1996.

activities.
Internship
While vigorously pursuing their academic goals at Macalester, economics
majors are active in preparing for their eventual careers. With the
coordination and assistance of the Career
Development Center and the Internship
Program, various internship opportunities help students transform
academic knowledge in economics into rewarding real life experience.Upon
graduation, many have secured jobs with the companies they interned
with. Some students share their recent internship experience here.
