International Studies and Literature Studies at Macalester: Reading Books in Worldwide Perspective

Track: Valuing Differences
Facilitator(s): David Moore
Time: 9:00AM – 10:30AM
Location: Hall of Fame Room - Leonard Center

What do Macalester faculty members do when they are not teaching classes, advising students, or working on diverse campus activities? In this presentation, veteran Macalester professor David Moore will offer windows onto three current projects which show the broad range of things one can do at the intersection of international studies and literary studies. Segments will include:

  1. Doing scholarship on a single author:  the great African American poet Langston Hughes, from Uzbekistan to South Africa, from the McCarthy interrogations to his private letters, with students and solo.
  2. Doing scholarship on a single book in ten languages:  Ferdinand Oyono’s novel “Houseboy,” from Cameroon in 1956.  How do you translate words like houseboy, khaki, whiskey, negro, white, and whip, from French into Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, German, Slovenian, Swahili, Swedish, and Vietnamese?
  3. Judging a book by its cover:  Chinua Achebe’s great 1958 novel Things Fall Apart is the most famous work of African literature in the world.  But how have people read it?  We’ll look at a half-century of covers of the book to find clues to that tricky question.

David will discuss how Macalester students have been involved in this work, and will leave plenty of time for questions and answers.

Life Balance: Vital Truths the Secret to Career/Life Satisfaction

Track: Valuing Differences
Facilitator(s): Bruce E. Roselle
Time: 9:00AM – 10:30AM
Location: Hall of Fame Room - Leonard Center

Balance is such an elusive concept that teases you into thinking it is possible to achieve, and then leaves you totally discouraged about having enough time and energy to pull it off. It is necessary to shift our perspective on life from one of scarcity, where there is something in your life that you want but do not have (like balance), to that of abundance, in which you desire the richness and potential that your life already possesses. People who live their lives out of a sense of its abundance know how to live a full, wholehearted life.

Wholehearted individuals live with an attitude of abundance that is based on a consistent and persistent belief in these vital truths:

  1. Know the purpose in what you propose to do
  2. Generate enthusiasm to achieve great things
  3. Focus on the beauty that remains
  4. Find hope in the thought that things will get better
  5. Think less about yourself and more about others
  6. Jog yourself physically, psychologically, spiritually
  7. Accept what you cannot change, change what you can

This interactive session provides an opportunity for you to explore each of these seven truths more fully and to identify ways in which you could be a more wholehearted individual at work, at home, and in your community.
