English 120, Section 5 – Introduction to Creative Writing  (Polansky)

This class will provide an introduction to the writing of poetry, short fiction, and the personal essay. The class will be part discussion of craft, part workshop. To see how these modes of writing are done when they are done very well, we will read: four volumes of poetry – one each by C.K.Williams, Anne Sexton, Henry Taylor, and Carolyn Forche; four collections of short stories, by J.D, Salinger, Lorrie Moore, Robert Coover, and Junot Diaz, and; three collections of essays, by E.B.White, James Baldwin, and Annie Dillard. Students will write, start to finish, five or six poems, one short story, and one personal essay.
