English 130: American Voices (Feerst)

MWF 10:50-11:50
CAR 206

This course examines texts on and around the quintessential American act – immigration – from the late 19th century to the recent past. We will read stories of arrival and survival in their particular and shared contexts, such as immigration laws, settlement patterns, ethnic cottage industries, and constructions of mainstream American culture. We will also attend to the formal and linguistic conventions of immigration narratives and the range of textual strategies they employ, such as ingratiation, didacticism, reproach, and reticence. Readings by Abraham Cahan, Pietro Di Donato, Carlos Bulosan, Piri Thomas, Bharati Mukherjee, Joy Kogawa, Ramon Perez, and Chang-Rae Lee.
