Fall 2005 Courses
English 137-03: The Novel (Shmurak)
TTh 1:00- 2:30
OLRI 301
This class examines a selection of novels that will allow us to consider not only the novel genre, but some of the myriad issues addressed by novels since their appearance as a literary form. Together we will inquire how these books construct class, gender, race, and nationhood, looking carefully at the contexts in which these stories were produced and how they engage contemporaneous social issues and cultural trends. Texts will range from the realistic to the fantastic, and will likely include Robinson Crusoe, Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Pale Fire, The Handmaid's Tale, Heat and Dust, and The Kite Runner. In addition to active participation in class and on a discussion board, students will write regular responses to texts as well as two papers.
