English 138: Literature from Theoretical Perspectives (Feerst)

This course offers students experience with an assortment of theoretical tools for textual interpretation. We will study influential texts of literary and cultural theory and read selected poetry and fiction from a variety of theoretical perspectives, including psychoanalytic, Marxist, feminist, structuralist, post-structuralist, new historicist, and post-colonial. Throughout, we will consider how to go about reading, thinking, and writing theoretically and what, if anything, it means to “do” theory. Readings by Barthes, Lacan, Kristeva, Foucault, Derrida, Gramsci, and Spivak.
