English 372 – American Literature 1900-1945 (Polansky)

Wary that we do not sacrifice, unduly, depth for breadth, we will consider some of the most important, and most interesting works – in prose, poetry, and drama – of American Literature 1900-1945. Of prose, we will read: James’s The Beast in the Jungle; Cather’s  O Pioneers!; Anzia Yezierska’s Bread Givers; Hemingway’s In Our Time; Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying; Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God; James Agee’s Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, and; Nathaniel West’s Miss Lonelyhearts. We will read the following plays: William Vaughn Moody’s The Great Divide; O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms; Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal; Philip Barry’s Holiday, and; a final play to be determined, Among the poets whose work we will consider are: Robert Frost, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Wallace Stevens, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Marianne Moore, E.E.Cummings, and Hart Crane. Students will write three essays and lead one class discussion.
