English 135-01: Introduction to Poetry (Tarnoff)

M/W/F 9:40-10:40am, Old Main 001

This course will look at how poems "work" - or, more specifically, how figures of speech, form, and the rhythm of words participate in the production of meaning. In addition, we will discuss how poems operate visually, ie. the ways in which poems constellate their meaning on the visual field of the page. We will focus on close readings and discussions of individual poems from the Renaissance to the present. Students will develop their analytic skills as well as their ability to express ideas through writing.
