Fall 2006 Courses
ENGL 294-01: Literary Publishing (Lorberer)
W 7:00-10:00pm, Old Main 111
Magazine and book publishers are arguably the first gates through which a work of literature must pass, and they often set the stage for how that work will be received. This course will look at both the history and practices of literary publishing, with an eye toward the various stages and skills required to make the written word public; we will also examine recent changes in technology, ideology, and economics that promise to change the publishing field dramatically in the 21st century. As the Twin Cities is a nationally-recognized mecca of literary publishing, students will be exposed to ideas and applications via guest speakers, field trips, and a publishing project; written course assignments will include book reviews, publisher profiles, and other case studies that pertain to the field.
