English 310-01: Shakespeare, Histories and Tragedies (Tarnoff)

M/W/F 9:40-10:40am, Old Main 001

This course will trace the evolution of Shakespeare's tragedies and history plays as well as the links between them. To what uses does Shakespeare put history – specifically English and Roman history – in his plays? In what ways do these tellings of history rely on the narrative resources associated with fiction? What are the political implications of tragedy and what assumptions about gender, race, and class underwrite its notions of heroism and moral action?
