English 340-01: Twentieth-Century British and Irish Literature (Attewell)

TR 2:45-4:15pm, Old Main 009

A study of works of British and Irish fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction prose from 1900 to the present, this course is organized around the theme of "encounter." We will explore how, in a century of upheaval, British men and women negotiated encounters with both the strange and the apparently familiar: with cultural, racial, class, and sexual others; with immigrants, colonials, and natives; with loved ones and enemies; with natural phenomena and man-made artifacts; and, of course, with themselves.

Authors to be studied include W. H. Auden, J. G. Ballard, Elizabeth Bowen, Angela Carter, Caryl Churchill, Joseph Conrad, Fred D'Aguiar, Carol Ann Duffy, T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster, Brian Friel, Graham Greene, C. L. R. James, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Paul Muldoon, Grace Nichols, George Orwell, Wilfred Owen, Jessie Pope, Jean Rhys, Siegfried Sassoon, Sam Selvon, Zadie Smith, Rebecca West, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, and William Butler Yeats.
