Internship Opportunities
Macalester English majors are able to take advantage of a variety of internship opportunities. Some work at book
publishers and literary magazines, while others find positions at local, national and
international nonprofit and activist institutions and groups, or in other types of community service. For more information, students should contact Anna Brailovsky, the Internship Coordinator for the English Department.
What follows is information about just a few of the many organizations who have employed Macalester English majors as interns. Please go to our current internships page for a list of open positions that may be of interest to English majors, or visit the Macalester College Internship Program
Graywolf Press
As a small, nonprofit literary publisher in Saint Paul, Graywolf Press
offers its interns a wide range of responsibilities, from reading fiction,
nonfiction, and poetry submissions to conducting marketing and development
research. The internship serves as a strong introduction to the realities of
the publishing world, some of which includes working with authors, editors,
and publicists, and some of which includes the day-to-day unglamorous tasks
of sending out press kits to reviewers and media. Every English major, or
any student interested in literature, will benefit from better understanding
how books come into being, how they are received in our contemporary
culture, and how they survive (or not) in a competitive marketplace.
Graywolf has hosted many Macalester student interns over the years, who have
been interested and vital participants in our work. Macalester students
always make for educated readers and enthusiastic interns, and so we
certainly welcome applications from the Macalester College community.
The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy
The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) has worked with a
number of interns from Macalester College. Interns have conducted research
and written in the areas of food security, sustainability, agricultural
systems and trade policy. By providing new perspectives and creative input
to our work, interns have furthered our mission: "To promote resilient
family farms, rural communities and ecosystems through research and
education, science and technology, and advocacy." Macalester College is to
be commended for providing students with experiences that contribute to the
health of our local and global community.
Minnesota Public Radio
Stephen Smith is a 1982 Macalester graduate who majored in English. Smith worked at the Mac Weekly, took journalism classes and was hectored endlessly by his advisor, Robert Warde. Smith was a 1992 William Benton Fellow at the University of Chicago where he received an M.A. in the Humanities. His documentaries and programs are broadcast worldwide on National Public Radio, Public Radio International and the BBC. Stephen Smith is Managing Editor of American RadioWorks, the national documentary unit of Minnesota Public Radio.
ARW's internship program offers an excellent opportunity for students to learn research and production skills while contributing to the work of one of the most acclaimed documentary units in public broadcasting. Numerous Mac students and recent grads have interned at ARW; some have gone on to lucrative and glamorous careers in public radio. For more information on ARW visit www.americanradioworks.org. For more on the internship program, contact Misha Quill at mquill@mpr.org or (651) 290-1500.
The Sierra Club
"The Sierra Club North Star Chapter enjoys its partnership with Macalester College. Most recently, I had the opportunity to work with a Macalester English major. We worked together to organize an environmental town meeting with Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak. The Macalester intern worked hand in hand with Sierra Club staff and organized a very well attended citizen town meeting. The experience for the intern was well rounded and the experience for Sierra Club was extremely productive. The combination of educational theory and real civic work is a very powerful and rewarding experience. Macalester College is a great partner because it is based in the city; attracts very talented students; and, encourages students to truly experience civic involvement."
