English 350: Twentieth Century Poetry (Burt)

There's way more good 20th century poetry in English than we, or anyone else, can come to know thoroughly in one term-- a good reason to do what we can. This course will introduce you to some major figures in English-language poetry since 1914, and give you a chance to spend more time with those you already know: expect serious attention to the poems, books and lives of W B Yeats, Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, W H Auden, Langston Hughes, Robert Lowell, John Ashbery, Gwendolyn Brooks, Philip Larkin, Adrienne Rich, James Merrill, Jorie Graham, Rae Armantrout, and James K Baxter (if we can get his books from New Zealand). That list may change slightly, but there's the general idea.
