English 351: Twentieth Century Dramatic Literature (Engel)

T-TH 10:10-11:40

This course will examine the evolution of 20th century dramatic literature from Ibsen to the present. Against a backdrop of emerging intellectual discourses (psychoanalysis, existentialism, Marxism, surrealism, postmodernism) and technological innovations (photography, film, television, the Internet) modern dramatists have struggled to identify their role as literary figures and to define the position of theater in society. We will pay close attention to the link between drama and social protest, particularly in contemporary works that confront issues of gender, race, class, and sexuality. Students will have the opportunity to do both creative and analytic work.
