English 404 - 01: Recent Theories of Narrative (McDougal)

Roland Barthes once declared that the narratives of the world are numberless. So too it seems are theories of narrative (now comprising the field known as "narratology"). We will familiarize ourselves with a number of these theories, and test their applicability on a wide range of texts, from advertisements to poems, short stories, novels and films. Our goal: to become more astute readers of all types of texts. Works will include anonymous ballads, poems by Browning and Pound, short fiction of Joyce, Borges, and Cortàzar, Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations, Mrs. Dalloway, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, If on a Winters' Night a Traveler, and several films.

Requirements; Two short papers and a final paper.
