English 120: Intro to Creative Writing (Polansky)

T/Th 1:00- 2:30 pm, CAR 404

This class will provide an introduction to the writing of poetry, short fiction, and the personal essay. The class will be part discussion of craft, part workshop. To see how these modes of writing are done when they are done very well, we will read: four volumes of poetry – on each by C.K.Williams, Anne Sexton, Henry Taylor, and Carolyn Forche; collections of short stories by J.D. Salinger, Lorrie Moore, Robert Coover, and Ernest Hemingway, and; collections of essays by E.B.White, Annie Dillard, and James Baldwin. Students will write, start to finish, four or five poems, one short story, and one personal essay.
