English 137-01: The Novel (Feerst)

M/W/F 1:10- 2:10 pm, Old Main 009

A close study of language and structure in novels drawn from a variety of geographical and historical situations. We will focus on formal characteristics, textual strategies, and the ways prose narratives register, reflect, and shape the societies and contexts from which they emerge. Critical essays on specific works and narrative fiction in general. Readings by Jane Austen, Henry James, Frank Norris, Joseph Conrad, V.S. Naipaul, Timothy Mo, Jeanette Winterson, Richard Powers, and J.M. Coetzee.
