English 281: Crafts of Writing: Fiction (Polansky)

T/Th 2:45- 4:15 pm, OLRI 243

An intensive, complicating look at the craft of fiction, this class will be part discussion, part workshop. Each week, in addition to student work, we will read and consider the work of established, more or less contemporary, fiction writers, asking of each work not so much what it means, but how it is made. The writers we will read are Ernest Hemingway, Eudora Welty, J.D. Salinger, Jorge Luis Borges (in translation), Robert Coover, Italo Calvino (in translation), Raymond Carver, Lorrie Moore, Denis Johnson, Mary Gaitskill, Edwidge Danticat, and Junot Diaz. Students will write, start to finish, two short stories, or, with permission, on longer piece.
