English 371: 19th-Century American Literature (Feerst)

American literature written after 1865, including poetry, autobiography, essays, short stories, and novels, in the context of changing social, economic, material, and political conditions such as reconstruction, development of the frontier, urbanization, immigration, and imperialism. Readings by Emerson, Whitman, Dickinson, Melville, Twain, Chopin, Freeman, Bierce, Howells, James, Far, de Burton, Chesnutt, and Norris.
