American literature after 1945, focusing on formal and stylistic innovation in social, political, and material contexts including the Cold War, Vietnam and the struggle for civil rights, multiculturalism, information technology, and late capitalism. Readings by Joseph Heller, James Baldwin, Maxine Hong Kingston, Nicholson Baker, Bharati Mukherjee, Gloria Naylor, Don DeLillo, Brett Easton Ellis, Richard Powers, and Percival Everett.
