Spring 2007 Courses

ENGL 283-01: Scriptwriting (Bognanni)

M/W/F 2:20-3:20pm, Old Main 010

In this course, we will concentrate on every aspect of the screenwriting process. We will read and write scripts, analyze films, and read scriptwriting method in an attempt to master the craft. Scripts and films will be examined from a writer's standpoint. We will study how some of the greatest scripts are built, how they master visual storytelling, pitch perfect dialogue, and flawless structure. There is no formula for perfect screenwriting, but there are rules and archetypes that the greatest writers have relied on since the birth of writing for film. There is a form to be learned. I will lecture at times, but mostly the class will be run as a workshop. Enriched writing and critical skills will come mostly from discussion, from careful exploration of your work and the work of others.
