Spring 2007 Courses
ENGL 311-01: Shakespeare: Comedies and Romances (Parker)
M/W/F 12:00-1:00pm, Old Main 010
Over the course of the semester we'll read a broad selection of Shakespeare's comedies (The Comedy of Errors, Love's Labours Lost, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night, As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing) and the four so-called "romances": (The Winter's Tale, The Tempest, Cymbeline and Pericles); plus probably a recent biography of Shakespeare. Considerations of genre will be an overarching concern (what makes a comedy? what is romance?), but on the whole we'll let the plays themselves dictate our thematic focus. One major goal of the course will be learning to write skillfully and knowledgeably about Shakespearean drama; students can expect regular writing workshops, library exercises, two papers, a midterm and final.
