Spring 2007 Courses
English 377-01: Native American Literature (Attewell)
M/W/F 3:30-4:30pm Old Main 010
In this course, we will attend to the diversity of indigenous literary production in the territories currently claimed by Canada and the United States, including Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and American Samoa. We will read novels, short stories, plays, poetry, children's literature, and non-fiction prose by such writers as Sherman Alexie, Joe Balaz, David Treuer, Monique Mojica, William Apess, Sarah Winnemucca, Carolyn Lei-Lanilau, Leslie Marmon Silko, James Welch, Eden Robinson, Simon Ortiz, and Richard Van Camp. We will also watch films ranging from the documentary to the realist to the romantic. Drawing on the work of indigenous critics, theorists, and historians like Hanauni Kay Trask, Phil Deloria, and Craig Womack, our discussions are likely to touch on, among other things, issues of history, memory and violence; of knowledge, identity, and representation; and of nationalism, sovereignty, and (loss of) place.
