Spring 2008 Courses
English 281-01: Crafts of Writing: Fiction (Lee)
T/TH 10:10-11:40am, Old Main 010
This course will be run as a workshop in writing short stories. To develop a critical vocabulary, we will begin with the examination of a text about writing and a short story collection to discuss technical issues of craft, such as time and place transitions, points of view, tenses, syntax, tone.
Each student will present four short stories in class. Ideally, stories will be between 6-12 pages. All work must be written during the semester; no recycled pieces.
Literary fiction only, no genre work, i.e., science fiction, fantasy, detective fiction, horror, romance, young adult fiction, children's literature, etc. Our aim will be to transcend formulas and strive for invention in narrative, language, and structure.
*First day attendance required*
