Campus Environmental Issues Committee
September 23, 1999
Olin-Rice 249, 4:00 P.M.
In attendance: 11 students, 4 staff, and 3 faculty.
After introducing ourselves, Aldemaro Romero, Environmental Studies Director Program, explained briefly the idea of reviving the CEIC, its nature as an open committee, and the general goals of making Macalester a greener campus.
Mark Dickinson, Physical Plant Director, followed with a summary of Physical Plant’s efforts in terms of energy efficiency. He stated that much more can be done on this but that the responsibility rested largely with the Macalester community. He considers that much could be saved by simple measures such as turning off offices and classrooms lights when not in used or by using fewer coffee machines and refrigerators, or for offices or classrooms in buildings, such as Carnegie, to open the windows during the summer instead of using air conditioning.
Michelle Kalstabakken, Custodial Services Manager, then explained current efforts and costs of recycling on campus. Romero then read an email from Jim Jeffers, Purchasing Director, where he listed recycled products bought by the College and well as the efforts on recycling Hewlett-Packard printer toner cartridges.
It was agreed that we should start from creating a climate within the College where environmental practices became an essential part of Macalester’s culture. It was agreed by consensus that the Committee should prepare a draft of a Environmental Mission Statement for Macalester, so it can become part of the core values of the College. Analogous mission statements from other colleges and universities in the U.S. will be collected and deposited in a drawer of a file cabinet of the Environmental Studies Study Room (O-R 249) for any interested party to consult and start working on that draft. Romero agreed to talk with Provost Hornbach about the appropriate procedures to present that draft to the Administration. He will inform the Committee on the results of his conversations on this matter.
Romero also informed the committee that during the next Faculty Meeting (October 13), he will be reporting on the revival of the CEIC and will extend an invitation to any interested faculty to join him.
After discussing some individual problems like, for example, carelessness in not utilizing the appropriate recycling bins to dispose of aluminum cans, the refusal of some faculty to accept double-sided research papers, paper waste in computer rooms, and the food practices by Bon Apetit, it was agreed that we will invite CIT and Bon Apetite to send a representative to our next meeting to see what can we do to solve these problems.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 pm.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 5, at 4:00 pm, in the ES Room (Olin-Rice 249).
