Campus Environmental Issues Committee

October 5, 1999
Olin-Rice 249, 4:00 p.m.

1.  Gary Lensing from Bon Appetit spoke about the food suppliers for Macalester. The primary supplier is Alliant Food Service Company. Bon Appetit is currently compacting boxes to recycle, hauling food away, and purchasing from a local bakery. Sarah Griesse in the Dean of Students was suggested as a contact for people interested in focusing on food issues. Brian, Jessa, Laura and Sarah volunteered to research the food situation on campus and come up with some suggestions for action.

2.  Dan Hornbach, the Provost, spoke about Macalester's goal to determine its core values. The creation of an Environmental Mission Statement for Macalester was suggested as a step towards promoting environmentally sound decisions as part of the core values. Brett Smith volunteered to head the Environmental Mission Statement committee. Any interested individuals should e-mail him.

3.  The goals of the Campus Environmental Issues Committee (CEIC) were questioned. What are we working towards? Researching what other colleges and universities have done to promote sustainability on campus is an important first step. Focusing on one topic each month (i.e. food, energy, recycling etc.), educating the EIC about the topic, and then acting based on the research done was suggested as a working format for the EIC. The Presidents council, a monthly meeting for administrators was suggested as a forum to educate the administration on the CEIC's monthly focus.

4.  Positive actions promoting environmental sustainability that happened on campus last year include: ‘Please switch off the lights’ signs, limit on all campus SPOs, e-mail TODAY service, and the power saving feature on new copiers.

5.  An CEIC web site is being created and will have a list serve for open communication. Letting the Macalester community know that the CEIC exists was also mentioned as a priority. The student government and trustees committees were suggested as a good tool to communicating to others the mission of the CEIC.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, October 19 at 4:00 P.M.  Given the large number of people attending this meeting, the place has been changed to Olin-Rice 301.
