Campus Environmental Issues Committee

October 19, 1999
Olin-Rice 301, 4:00 p.m.

In attendance:  A. Romero, K. Trail-Johnson, L. Gilles, S. Ullmer, C. Curran, M. Montgomery, S. Lind, D. Licata, L. Phillips, J. Jeffers, D. Bergstrom, A. Tietmayer, B. Kramer, L. Smith, B. Smith, P. Pfalz, M. Dickinson, J. Stewart, K. Paulson.

1.  Mission Statement

Brett Smith summarized the discussions of the subcommittee on the Environmental Mission Statement for Macalester. The question of the official standing of the Environmental Issues Committee was raised and A. Romero explained that this was a Committee created by an Executive Memo of Macalester's president in 1992. That after a few meetings the Committee had remained dormant and now had been revived with the approval of the current President, M. McPherson, and the then Provost Wayne Roberts. Thus, this was an officially recognized Committee by all standards. It was proposed to take The Talloires Declaration to the President for discussion with the understanding that if signed by him, this would be the first step towards articulating Macalester's environmental policies. A. Romero, J. Stewart, M. Dickinson, and S. Ullmer will visit the president with the proposal.

2.  Report of the Subcommittee on Food

Members of this Subcommittee report on their inquiries for alternative food sources for Macalester that were environmentally friendly. They will continue collecting information and will meet with the representative of Bon Appetit to explore the implementation of alternatives.

3.  Paper Overuse

Jim Jeffers reported on the increased of paper by the Macalester community. At this point he only has partial figures on this but will be collecting more complete information on this topic. It was agreed to create a subcommittee to analyze this issue and propose solutions. The Committee will be composed of A. Romero, J. Jeffers, B. Smith, Diane Licata, and K. Paulson. Romero will convene the meeting.

4.  Miscellaneous

Romero reported on the fact that the Web Page for the CEIC is up and running although more information will be added in the next few days. The page can be accessed through the Environmental Studies web page. Romero also reported that during the October 13 faculty Meeting he informed the faculty that the CEIC was revived. He added that he will continue to inform on the Committee activities during faculty meetings.

Next Meeting:  Thursday, November 4, at 4:00 pm in Olin-Rice 301.  P. Pfalz will make the appropriate room reservation.
