Campus Environmental Issues Committee

December 6, 1999
Olin-Rice 301, 4:00 p.m.

In attendance: A. Reser, B. Smith, J. Wallendal, D. Licata, C. Kilberg, B. Kramer, A. Tietmeyer, S. Ullmer, L. Brandt, C. Curran, M. Dickinson, A. Romero

1.  Meeting with the President

S. Ullmer, M. Dickinson, and A. Romero informed about their meeting with President McPherson. They said that it was a positive meeting and that the President had been supportive. The President has stressed that he wanted to make sure that the act of signing the Talloires Declaration was not an empty act. He recommended to open a campus-wide consultation to make sure that once the document had been signed, the College would honor the commitments. A number of informative meetings will take place with faculty, staff, students, and trustees. All these actions will culminate with a campus-wide meeting that the President is interested in participated in. The signing of the Declaration is scheduled to take place in April, 2000, during Earth Week. ACTION TAKEN: A. Romero will be meeting with the Curriculum Committee in order to explore how the environmental literacy requirement can be implemented. Given the multiplicity of student organizations, a special task force to be headed by J. Wallendal was created in order to make sure that each student organization is informed about the purposes of this initiative. Committee Members will become more proactive in keeping the issue in the campus media (Bulletin, MacWeekly).

2.  Policy Subcommittee

In addition to the general policy statements conveyed in the Talloires Declaration, a number of specific policies will be explored aimed to address policies on specific issues. The subcommittee informed about their participation in the Values' meeting that took place on December 4. A general survey is being conducted at Macalester in order to know the community's opinions and attitudes on environmental campus issues.

3.  Food Subcommittee

They are working on a preliminary report of their activities during the Fall of 1999. The report will be posted in the CEIC web page.

4.  Paper Subcommittee

The report is ready and will be posted in the CEIC web page.

5.  Objectives for Spring 2000

It was identified that among the objectives we want to accomplish for next semester are: the signing of the Talloires Declaration, the elaboration of specific policies, implementation of recommendations of the food and paper subcommittees, the creation of new subcommittees to look into other issues (e.g., energy consumption), and the increase campus awareness on environmental issues in general.

6.  Others

A. Romero informed that Janet Ebaugh had been hired as a Associate Director at Ordway and that one of her responsibilities will be to assist the ES Director in other areas and that she would be a good addition to the Committee given her past experience in action oriented policy implementation. C. Curran informed that Meadowlark had been published.
