In Attendance:

1.  Students’ Reports

a.  Chase Rude and Jessica Steinberg are compiling a list on what other colleges are doing for fund-raising for energy savings.

b.  Karen Martin and FitzDavid Smith met with Craig Aase, Treasurer, and learned that Macalester invests it’s money into four different companies. Three of these four companies had a list showing where the money was invested.

c.  Andy Miller and Claudia Curran reported that Macalester had no landscaping policy. They saw the cabinet which held the pesticides and fertilizers used on campus. They will be investigating the chemicals that are in these products. They will also be contacting someone from Hamline University about native landscaping.

d.  Andrea Tietmeyer, Brian Kramer, and Megan Kelly reported on solar energy at Macalester. They met with James Doyle of the Physics Department. He had several ideas and will find out how much it would cost. Andrea, Brian, and Megan would like to use solar energy to furnish 10% of energy use in the Olin Rice building. They are looking for grants to help finance this.

e.  Heather Crawford and Kelly Forney met with people from CIT and the library about paper reduction in these two areas. CIT and the library were supportive and will get more figures about paper consumption.

f.  Claudia Sanchez-de-Lozada reported that she met with David Bergstrom, Physical Plant. David gave them information and pointed out where energy was being wasted. Al suggested that Claudia and Lee Dooley talk to Terry Gorman to explore the possibility that security, during their rounds, always turn off lights in rooms that are not in use.

g.  Cristina Salazar and Justin Harbison reported that they haven’t done much as yet on surface pollution.

h.  Kira Pascoe and Sarah Ullmer sent out a flyer about CEIC to faculty and staff and the Mac Bulletin. They want to find other ways to inform the campus but are finding limitations and new rules.

i.  Margaret Woodward and Sarah Wisness talked to the accounting woman from Kagin and she said she couldn’t help. She suggested talking to the chefs regarding organic food. They found out that Kagin would not give out what they are paying for food. Margaret and Sarah will be talking to Sysco about food prices. They are checking into the possibility of a rooftop garden.

2.  Graduation Pledge

Al Romero informed the group that he’s been told that the graduation is already planned and they can’t do the pledge at that time. He suggested that a letter to the President be written regarding this.

3.  President’s Advisory Council

Al Romero, Patti Pfalz, and Sarah Ullmer met with the President’s Advisory Council. They presented the Talloires Declaration and it was well received. They informed the group that CEIC is there to help the campus become environmentally friendly.

4.  Information Campaign

Sarah Ullmer is looking for suggestions on how to get information and increase awareness to people on campus. She is trying to work within the system and following the rules but is not getting anywhere. Suggestions were tossed around including using MacWeekly or having a forum.

5.  Other

Al Romero reported that at the faculty meeting, President McPherson said that like Macalester, many colleges will be facing social issues and different groups present and handle these issues differently. He also mentioned that two trustees will be joining the CEIC.

Next meeting will be on March 30 at 4 p.m. in OlinRice 370.
