Campus Environmental Issues Committee
April 27, 2000
Several of you who regularly attend the CEIC meetings have told me that you cannot make it today. Since we do not have any pressing business and unless any of you have any strong objection, I would like to cancel today's meeting. I think this is that time of year when we are all overwhelmed with other duties.
I would not like to end the sessions of the Committee for this semester without expressing my deepest gratitude to all of you for the time and effort you put into advancing the idea of making Macalester a greener campus. Despite being made up exclusively by volunteers and not having any budget at all, we have accomplished a lot. Not only the will the Talloires Declaration be signed but also we have a much better idea of the things that need to be done to improve the environmental quality of our campus.
Yet, this is not the beginning of the end but the end of the beginning. There is a lot to do and many obstacles to overcome. A lot of hard work is ahead of us but I am sure that with our collective enthusiasm, we can reach even more ambitious goals.
A final word for the students who are graduating this year. I believe that as alumni, you can play a pivotal role in the immediate future. I hope that you will not be changing your hearts, just your hats, and will continue in helping the rest of us in achieving our goals.
