1. Areas to Focus On
Al mentioned that there are several areas that need to be worked on:
a. Implementation of the Talloires Declaration which includes the hiring of an Environmental Auditor. We need to check into foundations to pay for such a person. Subcommittees should also be formed to focus on certain aspects of the Declaration.
b. Last year's survey on campus attitudes shows that there is a lack of knowledge on environmental issues. Ways to educate the campus need to be explored.
Brett Smith commented that there needs to be voluntary commitments to reduce energy (fair share commitment). Mark Dickinson agrees with Brett, and also commented that we need to hold the campus energy levels to where they are now. Mark is also willing to talk about and show figures on the energy usage on campus at a future meeting.
2. Green Campus Audit
Erin Stojan from Hamline University, representing Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG), told the committee that nine schools are participating in the Green Campus Audit. This audit lists successes and failures. The audit should be done by the end of the semester.
3. Coffee Contract at Macalester
Laurie Hamre, Dean of Students, introduced Scott Patterson and T. J. Semanchin from Peace Coffee, who are one of three companies (the other two are Cloud Forest and Dunn) that are bidding to supply the coffee on campus. Peace Coffee is shade grown, organic, fair trade (small farmer cooperatives), and is delivered by bike. They mentioned that the coffee is environmentally, socially, and economically friendly.
4. Conclusion
Al stated that he would like the CEIC meetings to be issue-driven. If there is anybody who has any ideas for meetings, they should contact him.
