Campus Environmental Issues Committee
April 19, 2002
Olin-Rice 300, 3:45 p.m.
In Attendance: Joel Creswell, Peter Vaughan, Ana Murteira, Jesse Goldman, Irina Rossi, Catherine Neuschler, Daniel Ungier, Bernadette Miller, Janet Ebaugh.
The committee voted on the issue of whether it wants to define its focus as being on solely on-campus issues, or whether it is willing to be involved in environmental issues that occur elsewhere than Macalester. The committee decided that it would remain open to petitions from off-campus organizations and to action on off-campus issues, so long as they don't take up a significant amount of its time and resources, such that it can't adequately address on-campus issues.
Mary Claire Schulz in the Psychology Department asked the committee about battery recycling on campus. She said that Physical Plant used to do it, but they do not any longer. Ana Murteira will talk to Mark Dickinson about this.
Peter Vaughan presented a draft letter of interest to the Luce Foundation regarding their grant. He spoke to Elizabeth Cogswell in the Development Office, and learned that no one else at Macalester is applying for the grant, which means that the committee can apply. He also talked to Ruthanne Kurth-Schai in the Education Department about possibilities for using grant money to develop an environmental education program, in accordance with the Talloires Declaration, possibly involving the Ordway Preserve. She said that there are ample opportunities with St. Paul public schools to do this, as long as the schools do not have to provide funding. This possibility is included in his letter of interest to Luce. The Luce foundation provides four categories of programs which can apply for the grant. The committee decided that the Environmental Management category is the best fit with its goals. In other words, the grant money will go to training students to be better environmental managers. To this end, Peter also included in his letter the fact that the college would use the grant money to hire a College Director of Environmental Affairs, who would work with as many students as possible on various initiatives. Peter will meet with Elizabeth Cogswell on Wednesday to discuss the grant application and go over the letter for a final revision.
