Campus Environmental Issues Committee

October 3, 2002
Olin-Rice 249, 4:00 p.m.

Attendees:
Kirsten Fristad, Sara Johnson, Jesse Goldman, Rina Rossi, Mike Ring, Ana Murteira, Brett Smith, Mark Dickinson, Daniel Ungier, Lorin Hatch, Al Romero, Ann Esson.

Al began the meeting by saying he would like to cover two things:

  1. Implementation of Talloires Declaration.
  2. Coordinating campus ecology programs with University of St. Thomas.  Someone from St. Thomas was suppose to be at this meeting but was not there.

Talloires Declaration

Nothing has been done to carry out the implementation plan of the Talloires Declaration.  The Declaration also has a provision to hire an Director of College Environmental Affairs.  This person would be given the responsibility and authority to oversee the implementation of the Declaration in cooperation with the CEIC.  A proposal was submitted to the Luce Foundation to pay for the first three years of implementing the plan and paying the salary of the person hired.  It was speculated that since the college would not guarantee it would carry out the Talloires Declaration’s plan after the initial three years, the Luce Foundation rejected the proposal.

Brett mentioned that last year Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG) proposed that the college buy green power for some of its energy use.  Kirsten Fristad said that MPIRG has given up on that proposal because it was too expensive.  They are working on improving what the college already has.

Al then gave a history of CEIC.

The following suggestions were made:

  • Look at comparable liberal arts college to see if any of them have hired a environmental campus officer.
  • Meet with the President or Provost to talk about the Talloires Declaration.  The current system of implementation isn’t working.  We should invite them to a CEIC meeting.  The Provost, Dan Hornbach, should be included because he is on the Task Force on Budget.
  • Mark Dickinson pointed out that regarding green power, the timing is good now to approach the Provost because budget decisions are being made.  Also green power may be available now; it wasn’t last spring.
  • Jesse Goldman said that there has been discussion about having an environmental summit to bring groups together and talk about what they are doing.

Before meeting with the President or Provost, a number of things need to be done first.  Each suggestion is listed with the person or persons assigned to research it.

1.  List specific campus issues - Jessie Goldman

2.  See what other colleges have done - Ana Murteria

3.  List the philosophical issues relative to the Talloires Declaration - Brett Smith and Daniel Ungier

It was agreed to have the next meeting on Tuesday, October 15, at 4:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous

Lorin Hatch, Biology, introduced himself and mentioned that he will be teaching “Water Quality” for the spring semester and he is also writing a grant for campus ecology issues.

Minutes taken by Ann Esson.
