Campus Environmental Issues Committee
November 7, 2002
Olin-Rice 245, 4:30 p.m.
Attendees: Al Romero, Jesse Goldman, Daniel Ungier, Aaron Malone, Lobos Bosak, Dan Moring, Ana Murteira, Rina Rossi, Lindsey Lund, Mark Dickinson, Jim Straka, Patty Byrne Pfalz.
The meeting began by reviewing Mike McPherson’s letter to Al, in which he states his views on the CEIC and the Talloires Declaration. Al stressed the fact that the CEIC cannot make significant changes in the college’s environmental practices without the advent of an expert environmental director.
The prospects of getting an environmental director was discussed. The committee decided that the way to market this environmental director to the administration is to prove that this person could not only pay their own salary but also save the school money through the innovations that he or she would propose. Ana and others decided to call up other schools that have environmental directors and find out how the schools went about getting these directors and what his or her role is in the various campuses.
Jesse Goldman brought up the importance of ecological literacy requirements. Al reported that his proposal to have ecological literacy requirements, which could have doubled for other requirements – was rejected three years ago.
Dan Moring stated that MCSG passed a resolution the prior week stating that it would help to uphold the Talloires Declaration. MCSG has designated a legislative committee to assist the CEIC in trying to implement the Talloires Declaration.
Mark Dickinson stated that the wind turbine application is in and that it will with little doubt be implemented.
We discussed whether we should wait to set up a meeting with the Provost Dan Hornbach and Vice-President David Wheaton until next semester (as Jim Straka proposed), or to meet with them next week and take “baby steps” in working with them (as Mark Dickinson proposed). We ended up deciding that we should set up a meeting with Dan Hornbach and David Wheaton next week and begin taking steps such as improving the recycled content in the paper that document services purchases and reducing paper usage by using the internet for more class or event material.
Minutes taken by Jesse Goldman.
