1.  Rick Hermans:  Energy Audit

  • Electricity:  Macalester meets the benchmark used by Excel Energy; the usage is normal.
  • Natural Gas:  Macalester exceeds the benchmark for college space; the usage is very high.
  • An Energy Audit could determine:  Why are similar buildings performing dissimilarly?
  • It will only improve the situation by saving money, which is realistic but difficult.
  • To justify the position of an Environmental Affairs Director (EAD), we must go beyond simple audits into new areas of energy conservation such as sustainable building and cogeneration plants.
  • There are two options for surveys:
    • Audits measure energy, examine and compare the usage.
    • Recommissioning involves analyzing the building in great detail, and bring it to a "new" state, taking into consideration new technologies, comfort, indoor air quality, and energy use.
  • It was decided that Dickinson would meet with Hermans to discuss the reality of an audit at Macalester, and report back at the next meeting.

2.  Board of Trustees Meeting

Danny talked to the trustees and gave them the CEIC mission statement.

3.  Resource Document

Smith briefly presented a draft of the document and handed out copies to be discussed at the next meeting.

Next meeting:  4 p.m. (note time change), Tuesday, March 23.  Agenda:  Action steps, state of the campus environment report.

Minutes taken by Sally Weivoda.
