Attendance

Mark Dickinson, Brett Smith, Sally Weivoda, Danny Kaplan, Jim Davidson, Richard Graves, Julia Eagles, Gretchen Solomon, Ashley Ayres, Maggie Kinkead, David Boehnke, Michael Eastwood, Katie Dietrich, Karl McPhee

1.  Introduction of Agenda

  • Social Responsibility

  • Information Sharing

  • Portland Conference

  • Student Employment Position

  • New Initiatives

2.  Social Responsibility

Michael Eastwood is interested in expanding the student employment position in green procurement to include social responsibility.  Discussion concluded that this is something that could be included in the position in coming years, and may involve consultation with the Social Responsibility Committee.

3.  Information Sharing

  • Thursday of this week: EnviroThursday featuring Patrick Leet, an expert on Cuba.  Noon to 1 pm in Olin-Rice 250, refreshments provided.

  • Next week's EnviroThursday:  David Mech, internationally known wolf expert, will speak on the possible delisting of the grey wolf.

  • Thomas Ibsen (Mac alum) is continuing his work here with prairie restoration and native landscaping.  Early next month he will begin work seeding the brown area by the wind turbine (one of several required water detention areas on campus).

  • Mac-Groveland Community Council is interested in increasing communication and cooperation with Macalester students in regards to the environment.  Our contact, Rachel, may come to a CEIC meeting next month to discuss ways to foster campus-community interactions.  i.e., Earth Week activities, unwanted goods during move-out, etc.

  • Next Thursday, October 21, our representatives will leave for the Campus Sustainability conference in Portland.  The representatives are Dan Hornbach, Mark Dickinson, Richard Graves, Julia Eagles, Katie Edwards, and Kristin Pollock.

4.  Portland Conference

On Monday, October 18th, the representatives will be meeting to discuss how to best use their time in Portland.  Mark Dickinson is emailing to the CEIC a list of the sessions they can attend at the conference.  If anyone has any opinions on which would be most beneficial, or has other ideas, they can email dickinsonm@macalester.edu and he will bring it up at the meeting.

It was discussed that EPAG should be made aware of this conference for use in the curricular renewal process.  Perhaps they can incorporate sustainability into the process.

The representatives are tentatively scheduled to share their experience at the November 4th EnviroThursday.

5.  Student Employment Position

It was decided that the priority deadline for applicants would be this Friday, October 15, with applicants accepted on a rolling basis after that date.

Publicity methods were discussed, with a potential notice in the Mac Weekly seen as key.  The job description will also be emailed to environmental student orgs and other parties.

6.  New Initiatives

Energy Consumption

Facilities Management has had an expert come in to do data analysis and has discovered that our usage of BTUs per square foot is lower than before, which means we are using less energy per square foot.

Further decreases through student initiatives were discussed, such as campaigns to switch light bulbs and computer monitors to more energy efficient models.  Student behavior needs to be studied, with information gathered perhaps through a survey, to determine areas that need work.

It was decided that a subcommittee, led by Richard Graves, would be formed to work on this issue.

The next meeting of the CEIC will take place Tuesday October 26, 11:50-12:50 in Campus Center room 214.
