1. Introduction of a New Staff Member – Doug Rosenberg
Kathy Johnson is our new manager of Purchasing and Accounts Payable. Claudia Leung and Doug Rosenberg will be working under her on green procurement issues. The CEIC welcomes Kathy to the college.
2. Update from GBAC – Mark Dickinson and Kristin Pollock
The Green Building Advisory Committee met this morning to discuss plans for the Fieldhouse. They will meet again in a couple weeks, hopefully with President Brian Rosenberg.
The committee has yet to decide whether or not to pursue LEED certification, as it is a challenging and expensive process. Without it, we would be freer to focus on certain issues (energy, water, etc) instead of conforming to standards. They may look into the state’s Sustainable Building Design Guidelines for climate-specific methods.
A green/living roof was discussed as a way to reduce precipitation runoff and cool the building cheaply in summer. The plants used for this would require little to no maintenance.
Specifics like radiant heating in the floor, the recycling of materials, and indoor air quality were also discussed at the meeting.
The main issue right now is for the committee to determine what their inspiration or purpose is, and how that fits in with the college’s mission statement.
3. Survey on Environmental Opinions – Brett Smith
MCSG or another entity on campus may be willing to put out an electronic survey to gauge the students, faculty, and staff opinions on a U-Pass, Wind Energy, and Paper Consumption. The CEIC will work to create this survey and find an appropriate venue for its distribution.
