Campus Environmental Issues Committee
April 26, 2005
Campus Center 215, 11:50 a.m.
Attendance
Mark Dickinson, Brett Smith, Doug Rosenberg, Claudia Leung, Dan Murphy-Cairns, Karl McPhee, Kristin Pollock
1. Claudia reported on responses received from the Earth Week suggestion box: “Cool presentation of info!” How about recycling/reusing the Art building and Athletic buildings – perfectly good buildings that will be demolished soon.” “More environmental and just purchasing.” “Campus wide composting facilities.” “Home for Bike Share!” Buy renewable ENERGY!” “RAs or one room on every floor should have a box for batteries and empty ink cartridges. These two items need to be disposed of specially because they have harmful chemicals that shouldn’t enter landfills. In Illinois there are special programs for battery recycling and inkjet cartridges can be mailed back to the manufacturing company. I’d love to get involved in this project. Keep up the good work.”
2. Ben Mearns was scheduled to come to the meeting to discuss bus passes but he did not attend the meeting.
3. Claudia is working on her interim report on paper usage on campus.
4. Brent Smith commented about the new paper reduction campaign by the MN OEA.
5. Committee encouraged getting disseminated the electronic survey to gauge the students, faculty, and staff opinions on a U-Pass, Wind Energy, and Paper Consumption.
6. New Campus Vehicles
Committee discussed options for new vehicles as the College quits using 15 p vans in June. Claudia is investigating options for hybrid vans and it was also suggested to look at E-85 vehicles.
7. Next meeting
We probably will not meet again because it is the end of the semester. We may consider next year activities via email.
