Campus Environmental Issues Committee
October 25, 2005
Campus Center 206, 11:50 a.m.
Attendance
Brett Smith(Co-chair), Mark Dickinson (co-chair), Lon Hartzell (Bon Appetit), Kathy Johnson (Purchasing), Miki Palchick, Janet Aubin, Claire Briguglio, Sarah Stephens, Erin Foster West, Timothy DenHerder-Thomas, Maggie Hughes, Nadja Hogg, Kristin Pollock, Nikki Strong, Talia Kahn-Kravis, Ninya Loeppky, Richard Graves, Ruth Janisch Lake, Claudia Leung, Claire Stoscheck.
1. Green Building
Joel Schurke, representing INTEP, spoke at the last CEIC meeting about the campus relationship with INTEP in creating the new Athletics and Recreation building. INTEP will be meeting with the architects on November 16 and 17 with the completed “Duty Book” (a written explanation of Macalester’s choices/options for the construction of the athletic facilities). Mark will plan on scheduling Joel Schurke to return on November 22 for a second open meeting and will also make the “Duty Book” available in the library and/or ES office.
2. Paper Purchasing
- Kathy Johnson, purchasing manager, will report back on paper purchasing by the first of the year.
- On Timothy’s trip to St. Olaf, he reports that the campus is supplied by a business, Mohawk, which produces recycled paper by wind power; this could be looked into for Macalester.
- Janet brings up the issue of not being able to print double sided in certain labs (specifically, Olin-Rice and Kagin) and wonders if this could be fixed. Brett suggests that Claudia head this job by either working to default the computers to print double sided or create simple instructions explaining how to change the printer settings.
3. Campus Master Plan
- Brett asks how the CEIC would like to respond to the plan and what actions should be taken. -Mark comments that each project of the Master Plan has to be taken individually and as each component comes up for discussion, committees will have the opportunity to respond.
- Students respond that they would like to give feedback on the plan, and Brett suggests and open meeting on the Master Plan. Mark suggests a meeting on December 6, the last CEIC meeting of the semester, with Brian Rosenberg or David Wheaton and if available, local architects. If anyone has any other suggestions for discussing the Master Plan, contact Mark Dickinson.
4. Food Recycling/Campus Kitchens Project
- Nadja Hogg announces that Macalester has the possibility of receiving a grant to implement the Campus Kitchens Project. The Project would partner with dining services and take leftover food to be cooked, packaged and delivered to community groups that provide food to those in need. To begin this process, it must be decided whether Macalester is interested in pursuing the project, if it is feasible, if there will be enough volunteer hours, if there is available office space, etc.
- Lon Hartzell responds that she’s willing to participate in a study to examine the project’s feasibility, but is unsure of the amount of available food. Most food waste is unusable food left on students’ plates; what food is not used in the kitchen is usually served the next day.
- Students respond that their interest will most likely be affected by whether or not the project will be successful, if their efforts will produce a substantial amount of food and thus, a study may need to occur to assess the possible situation.
5. Natural Step Framework
- At EnviroThursday on October 6, Terry Gips (President of the Alliance for Sustainability) spoke about the Natural Step Framework that implements principles for addressing environmental challenges. Members of the committee are interested in exploring the use of this framework at Macalester. There will be a training session on November 9 and 16 in White Bear Lake (contact Timothy DenHerder-Thomas if interested).
- Ruth Janisch Lake announces that on October 31 at 9 a.m., a group is leaving the campus to meet with the Alliance for Sustainability (contact Ruth if interested).
6. Environmental Roundtable
Reminder that the next roundtable meeting will be, “Creating Healthy, Local Food Systems” (Thursday, October 27, 7-9 p.m. at the MLK Community Center, Mackubin St.).
7. Recycling
- Several CEIC members and students met with Jim Davidson, head of Macalester Recycling, last Thursday. The meeting suggested such ideas as switching some student workers to jobs on recycling, the need to understand Macalester’s recycling data, and creation of a comprehensive plan and goals. Jim offered to work with some students and organizations on campus recycling.
- It is suggested that information needs to be spread on recycling to the Macalester community as to what can be recycled, how items can be recycled, etc.
- Brett suggests the creation of a Macalester Recycling website including data and recycling instructions, as well as the creation of a recycling subcommittee (contact Brett if interested).
8. MacBike Student Worker
Claire Stoscheck reports that Mac Bike is working on implementing the bike share program at the Info Desk. To create this service and maintain the program, a student worker is needed who may also help promote alternative transportation for Macalester students. Brett agreed to work with Claire try to set up a student worker position.
9. Future Discussions and Next Meeting
- The trips to St. Olaf and Carleton still need to be discussed, as well as campus energy issues.
- Because of the amount of projects and issues that still need to be discussed by the CEIC, meetings may be held weekly for some time. They next meeting may be held next Tuesday November 1 (an email will be sent to confirm the next meeting).
Minutes taken by Claire Briguglio.
