Campus Environmental Issues Committee

Talloires Declaration

Al Romero reported that he attended the Social Responsibility Committee (SRC) meeting.  He told the SRC about the Talloires Declaration and mentioned that an environmental audit of the college will be done. Attendees at the meeting had questions and concerns about the Declaration and the audit.

After the SRC meeting, President McPherson had this comment:

"I've given a little more thought to "language" questions regarding the Declaration and implementation plan, following the excellent discussion at yesterday's SRC meeting.  It would seem to me helpful both to take note of differences between Macalester and universities, and also to show proper respect for the established governing institutions of the campus in contemplating action.  It would help me if we could agree that language like this would be incorporated as a preamble to the implementation plan."

There was a long discussion on this preamble.  Suggestions were made to accept the preamble the way it was written by President McPherson, not use the preamble and work on the Talloires Declaration for another year, or reword the preamble.  It was decided to use the preamble with few changes. Al asked the committee to send him their suggestions for the preamble.

Next meeting will be on April 27 at 4 p.m. in Olin-Rice 270.
