Campus Environmental Issues Committee

December 12, 2002
Olin-Rice 245, 4:30 p.m.

Attendees:
Brett Smith, Al Romero, Janet Ebaugh, Jesse Goldman, Daniel Ungier, Ana Murteira, Lobos Bosak, Patty Byrne Pfalz.

We began by discussing how the meeting with Dan Hornbach and David Wheaton went.  Everyone was enthusiastic about David Wheaton’s response and felt that he will really work to help us out.  However, we were also a bit taken back by Dan’s suggestion to have the school merely assign the task of the environmental director to a number of already overworked staff, who do not have the training to act in this position.

Brett suggested that we should focus on coming up with a procurement policy.  Al and Brett will get together over January to mull over their selective information on procurement policies and will try to develop a preliminary procurement policy or at least a form by the end of January.

It was also suggested that we meet with the new head of purchasing, Denise Farm, over the January break to inform her on our function and how we can work together.

It was also suggested that we try to find out more about what happened with the last grant written to the Luce Foundation.

Al will write an email to David Wheaton stating that we are developing a procurement policy and that it would be great if he could help along the process of searching for grant money for an environmental director by talking to the development office.

Daniel proposed that perhaps next semester we hold a campus wide meeting to discuss ways that we can incorporate environmentalism into the mission statement of the school.  This comment was partly based in David Wheaton’s belief that environmentalism should really be part of the school’s mission statement.

Janet urged the group to contact those members of MCSG that are working on helping to move forth on the Talloires Declaration.  Having read the MacWeekly, in which the MCSG legislative body on the Talloires met with Laura Hamre, she believes that it is important to move forward as a cohesive group.

Minutes taken by Jesse Goldman.
