1. Information Sharing
- There is an article in the Star Tribune on Carleton's new wind turbine, which gives the school 40% of its electricity.
- Tues Oct 5 there will be a webcast of a seminar on universities buying wind power, to be held in Albany, NY.
- This weekend is the Solar MN Tour. It includes a stop at our wind turbine. MacCARES will be tabling at the base with information.
- The information kiosk for our turbine is supposed to go up today.
- On October 20 at noon the Society of College/University Planners (SCUP) will have a webcast on campus sustainability.
- We have four students going to the National Conference on Sustainability in Education in Portland, OR, Oct. 21-23. Dan Hornbach (Provost) and Mark Dickinson (Facilities Management) will be going along with Richard Graves, Katie Edwards, Julia Eagles, and a fourth student TBD.
- The facilities managers of the ACTC would like a forum on sustainability.
2. New Student Employment Position in Purchasing for Green Procurement
- Doug Rosenberg shared the position description. The employee would hold the position all year, and be classified as a purchasing assistant in Business Services--Requisitioning, Purchasing, and Accounts Payable (RPA) with a first tier pay grade.
- It was decided that an ideal candidate for the job would be familiar with the CEIC, probably having attended its meetings, and would need to regularly attend future meetings.
- It was brought up that this person would greatly benefit from being one of our student representatives to the Portland conference.
- An article in the MacWeekly was discussed as a way to get the word out on the position. This seemed a valid option because it is a newly designed position and part of the CEIC's initiatives.
- It was decided that a priority deadline should be set for applications (TBD), with more accepted on a rolling basis, as a way to control the number of applicants and fill the job promptly.
- A subcommittee was formed to evaluate and interview candidates. This subcommittee is made up of Mark Dickinson, Brett Smith, Doug Rosenberg, and Sally Weivoda.
- It was brought up that the subcommittee could facilitate informational sessions for those interested in the position to increase their understanding.
3. Mission Statement
The mission statement drafted last spring was adopted today. The vote was unanimous.
4. Other Business
- MacCARES presented a proposal for a green building advisory committee. They requested that the CEIC recommend such a committee to President Rosenberg.
- The proposal included a list of possible committee members. Others were suggested by the CEIC, such as alumni or trustees.
- It was brought up that this document could be reformatted to apply to all future building projects, ensuring that a similar committee would assist in green building for projects other than the fieldhouse.
- MacCARES agreed to speak with the faculty members on the building committees for the fieldhouse project and the fine arts complex project.
- It was brought up that as part of the CEIC mission statement may cover this action, we may not need presidential permission. However, he would likely be informed of the committee formation as a courtesy.
- A subcommittee was formed to address the proposal. This subcommittee is made up of Mark Dickinson, Richard Graves, and David Boehnke.
Meeting adjourned at 12:45. The next meeting of the CEIC will be at the same time on October 12th in the Campus Center.
