Farm Sanctuary's New York and California Shelters

The Volunteer Internship Programs at Farm Sanctuary's New York and California Shelters provide individuals with unique opportunities to advocate for and connect with farm animals, establish community with like-minded people, and acquire valuable knowledge of the various facets of animal protection. Since Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986, interns have played a vital role in our efforts by enabling us to operate our shelters, conduct educational programs, and initiate campaigns to end the suffering of farm animals. Farm Sanctuary Internships are available at both of our shelters, as well as in various departments within our organization. Housing is provided for all interns who work at our California and New York Shelters. Overview: Solar College Initiative (www.solarcollege.org) is a project of GreenVision Institute (www.greenvisioninstitute.org), a national non-profit organization based in Cleveland, Ohio and San Francisco, CA, founded in November 2008 by Dr. Jacob Travis. Solar College Initiative (SCI) is dedicated to advancing solar energy on college and university campuses. SCI’s team of experts assists individual colleges and universities to assess their needs, build stakeholder support, develop requests for proposal, and negotiate the various avenues of financing to find a solution that best suits the needs of the institution . SCI’s team consists of leaders from the solar industry and renewable energy advocacy, and is supported by a network of professionals from a variety of sectors including solar, technology, finance, socially responsible business, and non-profit.
Position: SCI is currently seeking entrepreneurial, versatile, and passionate Solar Solutions Interns to assist in the deployment of our campus solar solutions. The Solar Solutions Interns will work directly with the Director of Campus Solutions and Technical Director to process campus-specific data, produce and edit campus-specific deliverables, and assist in the development and execution of campus solar solutions.
Responsibilities:
• Work with the Director of Campus Solutions and Technical Director on the deployment of campus solar solutions;
• Analyze data, summarize, and communicate through spreadsheets and reports;
• From analysis, provide insights into product strategy and research issues;
• Collaborate internally on special projects as needed.
Qualifications:
• Professional power user of Microsoft Excel;
• Excellent communication (verbal, written), analytical, project management, presentation, and computer skills. Statistical knowledge is a plus;
• Passionate commitment to SCI’s mission, vision and strategic direction;
• Highly self-motivated, well-organized, and capable of working independently;
• Ability to thrive in an environment characterized as fast-paced, creative, dynamic, and growing;
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint;
• SCI welcomes candidates working toward their Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in a related field such as Marketing, Business, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or an environmental or sustainability-related field. Skills from many disciplines are relevant, and must be applied through the lens of business, so business coursework is highly desirable.

2010 Summer Intern

Taconic Energy is a developmental research organization involved in commercializing novel technology for improving fuel economy of engines running on gasoline. The company is in need of a summer intern with a background in the principles of Organic Chemistry and experience working in an organic laboratory.
The ideal candidate will have the following prerequisites:
- At least on year course work in basic organic chemistry.
- At least one year experience performing basic organic reactions. Familiarity with set up of classical reactions, use of ground glassware, inert atmosphere and performing reactions at reduced pressures. Meticulous attention to detail and good record keeping. Good laboratory practice and working in safe manner.
- Familiarity with basic purification procedures including: distillations, filtrations and other methods for separating starting materials and impurities from a reaction.
Additional desirable skills include:
- Set up and running of basic analytical equipment including FTIR, gas chromatography, and liquid chromatography equipment.
- Advanced organic course and laboratory experience.
- Positive attitude and willingness to perform all required laboratory duties.

Corporate Accountability International

Have you ever wanted to learn how to run an issues-based organizing campaign? Are you passionate about making our food system healthier and more sustainable, or about defending access to clean, safe drinking water for all? Our campaigns internships are a leadership skills building program, in which interns will take on a significant project to advance Corporate Accountability International’s Think Outside the Bottle or Value [the] Meal campaigns.
Corporate Accountability International (formerly Infact) is a membership organization that protects people by waging and winning campaigns challenging irresponsible and dangerous corporate actions around the world. You will be working side-by-side with a team of talented and seasoned organizers in a dynamic campaign atmosphere, working for justice and effective social change. Our campaigns internship is a leadership skills-building program, in which interns will take on a significant project to advance Corporate Accountability International’s work. Interns will have primary responsibility for significant projects and will master a variety of skills, including:
- Organizing outreach and educational events.
- Recruiting and training volunteers.
- Outreach to activists in person and on the phone.
- Campaigns Research.
- Design of organizing materials.
- Ongoing administration to support the work of the campaigns team.
- Additional training in fundraising and communications may be included, depending on the interests of the intern and needs of the campaign work.
Value [the] Meal Internship
Value [the] Meal is part of our Campaign Challenging Corporate Abuse of our Food, working to secure people’s access to healthy, sustainable, affordable food. We have launched Value [the] Meal to educate the public about the impact of the fast food industry on our health, our planet and our children. As an Value [the] Meal intern you will help lead outreach to activists, students, faith communities, restaurants or community leaders to put limits on the fast food industry’s manipulative marketing to children, interference in public policy and nutrition science, and attempts to hide the true health risks of their products.
Think Outside The Bottle Internship
Think Outside the Bottle is part of our Campaign Challenging Corporate Control of Water, and working to promote, protect and ensure public funding for our public water systems. As a Think Outside the Bottle intern, you will help lead outreach to activists, students, faith communities, restaurants or community leaders to move mayors and governors to stand up for strong pubic water systems and to cut city and state spending on bottled water.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to corporate accountability and social justice.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic organizing experience in a high-energy campaign or non-profit setting desirable.
- Experience with databases desirable, and at ease with MS Word and computers overall.
- Organizational skills and the ability to juggle several tasks while meeting deadlines.
- Active in a student group on campus and/or willingness to bring the campaign back to campus.
- Able to commit 15-25 hours per week during the fall or spring semester with an agreed upon schedule

Watercraft Inspector Intern

Title: Watercraft Inspector Intern or Watercraft Inspector Supervisor Intern
Position: Temporary Full-Time. Must work weekends and some holidays from 4/23/10- 10/12/10 (start and end dates flexible based on school schedules), Mandatory training 4/23/10 and 4/24/10 in St. Paul or 5/7/10 and 5/8/10 in Brainerd. Watercraft Inspector pay rate for all crews except for Minnetonka $7.50 per hour (with bonuses awarded for weekend and total hours up to $1,430) plus mileage reimbursement, Minnetonka crew pay rate is $7.00 per hour (with bonuses awarded up to $2,300) plus mileage reimbursement.

General Description: The Watercraft Inspector serves to inform and educate the public to the threats of ecologically harmful aquatic invasive species to Minnesota’s waters. Inspectors work at public water access sites educating the public by providing information to watercraft users and conducting a brief survey while inspecting watercraft for exotic species. Other duties include assisting the coordinator with access postings, assisting Conservation Officers with access checks, aquatic plant removal, and other natural resource projects.
Duties:
- Educate the public on invasive species program and issues
- Distribute written information to watercraft users
- Inspect watercraft for invasive species
- Conduct a verbal survey & inspection inventory
- Document and record research activities
Program Structure: Watercraft Inspectors will be assigned to a specific area of responsibility, which may include up to ten public water accesses. Inspectors will be responsible for their individual work schedule upon approval of their supervisor. Personal vehicle use is required and mileage will be reimbursed.
