Minnesota Conservation Corps
Posted 5/7/08

The Minnesota Conservation Corps (MCC) Youth Outdoors Program is currently accepting applications for part time Crew Leaders (CLs) and Assistant Crew Leaders (ACLs) for fall 2008.  These positions involve supervising high-school age youth after school and on weekends in educational activities and work projects related to environmental and community stewardship.

Youth Outdoors participants spend 12 hours a week performing conservation and community service work in St. Paul and Washington County neighborhoods.  Youth also participate in urban environmental education, leadership, and recreation activities each week. This isn't the typical classroom setting but instead a hands-on experience that is exciting and rewarding!

CLs and ACLs work 15 hours/week (Tues., Thurs. and Sat.).  They act as mentors, work supervisors, educators and role models, facilitating healthy youth development and promoting environmental stewardship.  Applicants must be at least 19 years old, have experience working with youth, and be passionate about youth, the environment and service work.  Bilingual applicants desired.  A valid driver's license and good driving record are required. Background checks by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and National Sex Offender Public Registry will be conducted before offers of employment are made.

St. Paul Smart Trips
Posted 5/7/08

In April, the Midway and St Paul TMOs merged to create a citywide organization called St Paul Smart Trips.

They got a number of different initiatives in the works and are looking to hire an intern to help out.  One specific initiative that
they could use some assistance with is helping St Paul businesses to establish Travel Demand Management (TDM) plans for the RNC convention.  Their goal with this initiative is to take advantage of the RNC to get companies thinking differently about how their employees commute to work with the hopes that we can ultimately keep many of them out of their cars and using alternatives to driving alone for the long term.

Another project they need help with is to update our downtown parking guide, see link: http://www.smart-trips.org/parkingmaps.php.  This has been a long term project of the downtown TMO.  The guide is very well
used but ultimately runs contrary to our mission of reducing Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT).  We'd like to develop a new guide that still provides parking information but from a different approach that also encourages alternatives or "Smart Trips".

Eureka Recycling
Posted 5/7/08

Research Intern - Focus: Composting

In 2008, Eureka Recycling will launch and continue education campaigns for several large initiatives about composting, including the launch of curbside compost collection in the City of Saint Paul, a commercial compost program for restaurants, co-ops, and farmer’s markets in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, as well as backyard and worm composting workshops. This intern will support these education campaigns by researching powerful and accurate information about the environmental impacts of recycling and composting. Eureka Recycling believes that this information, coupled with the opportunity for people to experience a world without waste through recycling, composting, and waste reduction, can help people make a strong connection between their consumption and their wasting. When the connection is made, people are more motivated to take daily actions to reduce their waste. Using the Environmental Impact of Products (EIPRO) life cycle analysis report as a starting point, this intern will gather and analyze available research about food waste, food packaging and how we manage those resources at the end of their use. The study shows three areas where humans are having the most significant impact on the environment: food and drink, transportation, and housing. Together they are responsible for 70–80% of the environmental impacts resulting from human behaviors. Eureka Recycling’s work intersects directly with these findings on food and drink consumption at the point of wasting. This internship is ideal for a student who is interested in conducting research that is vital to the development of education
messages that will motivate people to make significant behavior changes.

Customer Relations Intern

The customer relations team is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with all of Eureka Recycling’s partners, including resident, cities, counties and other businesses and organizations. The Customer Relations Intern will provide support for this team by assisting staff in a variety of tasks to meet their objectives and by coordinating projects at the administrative level. This intern will greatly assist customer relations staff in developing procedural and operational efficiencies in the management of various aspects of the curbside, multifamily and commercial recycling programs. This intern will work closely with the Customer Service Manager to assist in analysis of customer service issues and outline a system for electronically tracking issues and responses. This intern will also be fully trained in recycling methods and application of the best practices in multifamily recycling based on the 2004 study and Multifamily Toolkit produced by Eureka Recycling. This intern will help to analyze Eureka Recycling’s
multifamily recycling program in order to identify outreach needs for owners, managers, and residents in apartment buildings, condominiums, and town homes. By having direct contact with the public, this intern will provide excellent customer service and increase awareness of the various aspects of what makes recycling successful for buildings.

Neighborhood Outreach Intern

The Neighborhood Outreach Intern will assist in implementation of an outreach campaign directed toward residents served by Eureka Recycling. The campaign is designed to educate and motivate diverse groups of people to participate in curbside recycling. Initiatives include door to door outreach, community events and distributing recycling bins at scheduled events. Because this internship is focused on community outreach, the hours will vary from week to week depending on when door to door outreach and events are planned. The hours will be scheduled in advance, at the beginning of the internship. For maximum response, this outreach will take place in the evenings and on weekends when residents are most often at home. This intern will come away from this experience knowing how to execute a targeted outreach plan, and gain experience in leadership and team collaboration. Eureka Recycling is seeking an outgoing, energetic, and articulate individual to assist the communications team in implementing a curbside education campaign in summer 2008. This position is ideal for someone looking for experience in a wide range of grassroots outreach methods used by a community nonprofit organization.

These positions will be filled as soon as possible. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Please call or email for an application. Once the position has been filled, additional applicants will not be considered.

Pioneer Madagascar Program and Lemur Venture
Posted 4/16/08

The Pioneer Madagascar Program and Lemur Venture are initiatives of Azafady, a registered charity in the UK (No. 1079121) and a Malagasy NGO. Azafady has been working on environmental, humanitarian and sustainable development projects in southeast Madagascar since 1994.

Pioneer Madagascar Program - participants on the Pioneer Madagascar Program work on our projects in the field, gaining understanding of the resource needs of impoverished village communities and how this impacts on conservation efforts. Pioneers work in three interrelated areas over the course of the program: sustainable livelihoods development, health-based infrastructure and education, and habitat and species conservation. Typical projects include building wells and latrines; building and equipping schools; health and environmental education in rural areas; forest conservation; and sustainable income generating activities such as beekeeping and community vegetable gardens. Pioneer Madagascar is offered as a volunteer program and also as an internship for those wishing to gain experience and/or credit for a college or university course.

Lemur Venture - Azafady has teamed up with Madagascar's Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza (PBZT) on Lemur Venture - a unique volunteer research program designed to discover more about lemurs and their natural habitat. Our volunteers train initially alongside the PBZT team before heading out to the field to study wild lemurs. Lemur Venture's special focus is on gathering information on several lemur species in order to improve success rates of captive breeding programs both in Madagascar and around the world.

Azafady welcomes applications for both programs from those who are studying or have studied anthropology, zoology, biological/environmental studies or science, African studies, international relations and other related courses. Our opportunities are suitable for people interested in a future in not-for-profit organizations, NGOs, conservation, sustainable development or humanitarian causes. Although we do not require volunteers to have previous experience or knowledge in these areas, we believe that people with interest in these fields will make ideal candidates.

For further information on Azafady, please visit our website at www.azafadyusa.org.  Application forms for both programs are downloadable from the website. Any questions can be directed to Azafady at the contact details below:

Volunteer/Internship Position Dates:   June 1-8 to late September or mid-November. The Wilderness Resources program internship requires a minimum commitment through at least mid-September.
