The Mac Weekly - April 24, 2009

Students Celebrate Earth Day

By April DeJarlais

Though Earth Day was Wednesday, Macalester students will be able to celebrate for seven days with Earth Week 2009: Environment and Equity. There will be daily events on campus and many more throughout the Twin Cities community.

A party outside the Campus Center from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm continues the earth week celebration that started on Monday. Available will be a bike sale from Sibley Bike Depot, bike repairs, live music, environmental crafts and vegan snacks made from a solar oven.

Saturday marks the grand opening of the spring Farmer's Market. Students can meet in the Campus Center at 9:00 am for a bus trip to the market.

Civic Engagement Center employee Hannah Rivenburgh '10 worked to schedule the events. She hopes that this year's Earth Week will be more successful in terms of participation.

"It's fun to be the one to coordinate," she said.

Mac students also participated in environmental events earlier in the week.

Students biked to the capital to rally for green jobs and infrastructure, while others rode down to the Mississippi to enjoy the view.

Other events included a film screening of a documentary on the re-route of highway 55 and Café Mac's low carbon diet day.

Former Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970 with a participation of 20 million Americans. The event has spread to roughly 200 countries and hundreds of millions of people.
