Malaria: The Deadly Disease
|
 |
| "According to material from Third World Network Features, in Africa alone, direct
and indirect costs of malaria amounted to US $800 million in 1987 and are
expected to reach US $1.8 billion annually by 1995." [2] |

Economic Ramifications
of Malaria
Malaria
has had clear economic ramifications for many nations “It has been estimated in
a retrospective analysis that economic growth per year of countries with
intensive malaria was 1.3% lower than that of countries without malaria.” and
“Costs to individuals and their families include: purchase of drugs for
treating malaria at home; expenses for travel to, and treatment at,
dispensaries and clinics; lost days of work; absence from school; expenses for
preventive measures; expenses for burial in case of deaths.”
Even
if a victim survives a bout of
malaria, there is often physical disability associated with later life
as well
as recurring illness. The total toll on GNP is astounding with
this killer likely keeping these people in poverty. The wealth of
a nation is strongly linked with its productivity and malaria is
taking a deadly toll.
