1.  Representative from Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment On Campus

A representative from Duke University will be on campus to talk about their two-year graduate program at the Nicholas School of Environment & Earth Sciences on Tuesday, October 16, lower level, Campus Center.

2.  Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs

University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs is offering some information sessions.   These sessions cover their graduate programs in Public Policy, Science Technology and Environmental Policy and Urban and Regional planning and will be held on the following dates:

Wednesday, November 7, 2007 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Tuesday, November 20, 2007 from 12:00 to 1:30 PM
Tuesday, December 4, 2007 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM

3.  Free Workshops

4.  Graduate Funding Program Supported by the National Science Foundation

The University of Wisconsin's CHANGE (Certificate on Humans and the Global Environment) program is looking for exceptional Ph.D. students who want to become "change agents" through their research on global environmental vulnerability and sustainability. With IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education, Research, and Training) grant funding from the National Science Foundation we can provide up to two years of full financial support to qualified incoming Ph.D. students. The CHANGE program involves faculty members in departments ranging from atmospheric and oceanic sciences, geography, and environmental history to rural sociology, environmental studies, and public health.  Application deadline, January 2, 2008.

5.  14th Annual Soul Conference

Wisdom Ways Center for Spirituality invites you to participate in the 14th Annual Soul Conference:

6.  National Wildlife Federation's Chill Out

Chill Out:  Campus Solutions to Global Warming is the nation’s only competition recognizing colleges and universities for their efforts to solve global warming issues.  And they looking for the best campus-based projects in clean energy, energy efficiency, transportation, habitat restoration, waste reduction and more.

You can enter to win two ways:

  • Write a 500-word essay describing your school’s efforts.
  • Create an original three-minute video about your project and upload it to YouTube.

Winning videos will be chosen by NWF and the YouTube community.  So the more views and votes, the better your chance of winning!

Entries are due by November 30 for your chance to win grant money, prizes, and national publicity.  Students, faculty, and staff are eligible to win.

7.  Green Corps Training Program and Environmental Advocacy and Organizing

Green Corps, the non-profit Field School for Environmental Organizing is now accepting applications for our year-long training program in environmental advocacy and organizing for recent college graduates.   Green Corps is the non-profit Field School for Environmental Organizing, founded by leading environmentalists in 1992 to train environmental organizers.  Their program includes intensive classroom training, hands-on experience running urgent environmental campaigns, and placement in permanent positions with leading environmental and social change groups.

To apply to Green Corps, fill out their online application by the Early Application Deadline of Oct. 26, 2007.  Deadlines, 2nd round interview locations, and our online application are at http://www.greencorps.org.

8.  Student Conservation Association Contest

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is offering students an opportunity to protect the environment, challenge their intellect, and win top prizes.

SCA seeks to engage the intelligence and passion of America's young leaders to help restore and protect our natural world.  They are looking for practical solutions that involve young people in addressing an environmental challenge.

  • Submissions may be a research project or thesis as well as video, PowerPoint, or even a website
  • Prizes include a 2008 Mazda3i, $37,000, and eight expense-paid trips to SCA’s April 2008 EarthVision Summit in Washington DC
  • The deadline is December 1, 2007.

The SCA/Mazda Conservation in Action Multimedia Contest is part of a year-long series of events to celebrate SCA’s 50th anniversary and honor founder Elizabeth Titus Putnam, whose senior thesis launched SCA in 1957.  She proved that a young person with vision and determination can make a difference.  SCA believes that’s still possible.

9.  Grassroots Campaigns, Inc. Hiring Staff

Grassroots Campaigns, Inc. (GCI) is a national political consulting firm specializing in building grassroots support for causes, political candidates, public interest campaigns, and non-profit fundraising operations.   THey are currently interviewing potential staff for our campaigns.  Grassroots Campaigns’ current and past clients include Environmental Action, MoveOn.org, the Democratic National Committee, the ACLU, and the League of Conservation Voters.

They are hiring for the following positions:

Position:  Citizen Outreach Director - Citizen Outreach Directors and Assistant Directors manage grassroots fundraising offices. They work with a team of other directors to recruit, train, and work with a staff of up to 100 paid canvassers to build support for the 2008 elections and a wide range of nonprofit organizations.

Position:  Field Organizer - Field Organizers work in targeted Congressional districts and major metropolitan areas around the country. They will recruit, train, and work with volunteers to build the support needed to win on critical issues and get good candidates elected. In fall 2008 Field Organizers will help run one of the largest get-out-the-vote drives in the country.

Qualifications For All Positions - Sound communication and motivational skills, strong desire for political change, and work ethic are essential. We are looking for people who have a strong leadership background, and who are ready to take on a lot of responsibility. Previous field organizing or canvass experience is a plus, but not a pre-requisite.

Salary/Benefits - Annual salary begins at $24,000, and increases commensurate with experience. Staff may opt into our health care plan. Student loan assistance repayment program offered.
